Falls is a very big problem in our older population and is often one that is overlooked in the community setting.
It is estimated that one in three adults over the age of 65 will have one fall a year, with half of these having more. As physiotherapists we understand not only the physical injuries that a fall can cause but also the impact that a fall can have on a clients' confidence and how this in turn can then affect their day-to-day activities. Our falls prevention programmes target muscle strengthening, weight bearing exercises (to help increase bone density), balance exercises and confidence building. We also give advice on how to minimize the risk of falls and practical advice on how to cope in the event of a fall and will happily include family or carers in these sessions.
